Sir John A. Macdonald

Posted 4/14/2021

Late March 2021, Regina City council voted in favour to remove a statue of Sir John A. Macdonald from Victoria Park. Passing with a vote of seven to four, they eventually removed the statue April 7th,2021. Sir John A’s statue is to be put in storage while the city consults with the public on what to do with it.

Rumours of the removal pre date mid 2020 and prompted fierce debates. A published report by city administrators said the statue overlooks the negative impacts Macdonald's policies and initiatives have had on Indigenous peoples. Stadnichuk, one councillor claimed, “We are insulted from some of the pain that people feel when they see the statue…”

In June 2020, in what I consider a waste of taxpayers’ money, the City created a Legacy Review. A web-based community conversation sharing people’s stories. Learning of the removal and of Sir John A’s Legacy Review, I organised my thoughts. If the Woke wish to erase history, there are a few other notables that should see their display removed from Canadian edifices.

Wishing to rebut this nonsense, I submitted my toonie’s worth (inflation, you see).

“Within our woke society, if we are to remove Sir John A. Macdonald, we must remove any edifice concerning Tommy Douglas. Tommy Douglas supported eugenics and traveled to Nazi Germany in 1936 seeking additional “socialistic” knowledge because he supported much of Hitler’s socialist policies. Douglas’s thesis, entitled The Problems of the Subnormal Family, embraced eugenics along with forced sterilization and segregation for people of “sub-normal” intelligence and morality. Tommy Douglas proposed a system requiring couples seeking to marry to be certified as mentally and morally fit. Those deemed “subnormal” because of low intelligence, moral laxity or venereal disease would surrender to state farms or camps while those judged mentally defective or incurably diseased would be sterilized. And we call Tommy Douglas the “Father of Health care”.”

Immediately after submitting my ‘story,’ my email inbox pinged. This is what returned: “Our systems have picked up some potentially bad language within your forum title/description. We will need to review it before it appears on the site.”

I never received word of what my ‘potentially bad language’ was. Nor did I receive a confirmation my thoughts posted. Reviewing website a few days later, I noticed they had posted my thoughts. [i]
